Emergency Services

The Emergency Department is staffed 24 hrs a day 7 days a week with an emergency room physician who is either on site or on call, nurses with specialized training and education and also a Physician Assistant. The Physician Assistant is a new role that has been introduced to Ontario’s health care system. The Physician Assistant is a skilled health professional trained to support physicians and to help reduce wait times. The Physician Assistant works under the direction of a supervising physician.

Upon arrival at the Emergency Department, a triage nurse will decide the severity of your illness and how quickly you will need treatment. This decision is based on a brief history and physical assessment. Critically ill patients or injured patients are always seen first, as patients are seen in order of priority not by time of arrival.

The Emergency Department treats approximately 17,000 – 18,000 patients each year. All types of emergencies are managed in the Emergency Department ranging from minor procedures to major trauma, affecting patients of all ages.

The Emergency Department does not give out medical advice over the phone. You can call the telehealth number @ 1-866-797-0000. This is a free confidential telephone service that you can call to get health advice or general health information from a registered nurse.
